“Who you are is who you’ve always been.”
This sounds like a bit of a contradiction to the notion of growth and “the evolution” of oneself, right?
Well it is and it isn’t.
I believe in life being a journey and that our life experiences have the ability to shape us into new creatures with their passing. However, I’m strongly anchored in the belief that there are many parts of us that stay exactly the same. Not out of a failure to mature or rebellion, but simply because these traits and qualities make us, us!
I’ve always believed this, but I recently came across a LookBook I curated and styled back in 2011 for Fatimaya, a Bermudian Vintage boutique, and it reopened this train of thought.
Initially, it moved me to tears.
Not because the work is so grand but because it validated this very notion. I had no idea then that I would be getting paid to do this very act, for multiple establishments, years later. I did it because I loved it. It reminded me that there are innate things about us that will reign supreme in our lives forever. I forgot all about these exact images, but looking at the way in which I directed each shot is very similar to the way I work now.
Who you are is who you’ve always been.
I say all of this to say, trust what’s inside of you! The ideas you can’t seem to shake and the creativity you can’t wait to express- don’t ever lose what makes you tick! Nurture it and then release it! Be unapologetic about your dreams! Lastly, don’t be discouraged if others don’t/won’t see your vision, that’s okay, God didn’t give it to them.
Here’s a look at some select images from the project:
Photographs by Aden Peets
Model: Kryshaé Furbert, my cousin
We also shot most of it in my home.
(Note, work with who and what you have!)
Because we were shooting vintage and thrift items, we naturally opted for a film camera…
