I’ve always been fascinated with how adversity affects human potential and personal relationships. Having had my fair share of adversity from family issues to toxic relationships, I know first-hand how easy it is to go down the wrong path. I discovered that self-care and self-awareness are the keys to overcoming any obstacle.
From my personal experiences and the experiences of people around me, I became inspired to create Grow With Shiniece J. Too often I’ve noticed that growth is stifled by things we have full control over. I’m passionate about helping people get passed the inevitable challenges and create a life that they are truly satisfied with.
One of the most common struggles I see among my clients is their ability to cope with stress. It’s easy to underestimate the impact that it has on our lives because there are stressors everywhere. But stress can take a serious toll on your overall well-being.
Make time for YOU. This is one of my mandatory daily self-care practices, especially during a stressful period. I know that when things get hard, it’s easy to get so wrapped up in everyone and everything else. You may think that taking a moment for yourself may come across selfish, but it’s quite the opposite.
We all have a natural ability to handle stress but once you let things beyond your control consume you that’s when you are in trouble! This will create something called a stress cycle.
stressor -> your reaction -> wear & tear on your well-being -> reduced optimal health -> increased sensitivity to stress -> new stressor
I struggled with controlling my own stress for many years, it’s something I have to work on every day. One thing that has always brought me peace of mind in the midst of chaos is finding a positive distraction. The two things that I’ve found work best for me are exercise and writing.
Cardio is the best way to combat stress! If you hate running on a treadmill, experiment with different equipment. Try a dance class. Go for a walk!
Keeping a journal is a great way to release negative emotions. This is a great option for extremely private individuals. It’s your own safe place to vent and let it go.
In this moment right now, I know how impossible it may seem to think of your happiness. But you have to!
These have worked best for me but find what works best for you! Find something you are passionate about and throw yourself into it when you feel stressed. Having something that you can escape and do even if it’s within your own home will help keep you level headed.
“Stress should be a powerful driving force, not an obstacle.”
This too shall pass.
